MMA Institute Battles at the Beach

Fighting in their first MMA fights, Josh Matheney and Mark Mehrhof broke into the MMA scene strong at the June 23 Battle at the Beach.  Although Mark did not have a reach advantage, he landed continuous blows to the face of his opponent.  The first round began with Mark landing a nice leg kick, but to prove his ability to transition, he included a Matt Hughes-like slam in each round.  After three rounds of Mark dominating with ground and pound, he won by unanimous decision.

Josh dominated his fights with strong stand-up combined with slick Jiu Jitsu   He finished his first fight quickly with an arm bar.  Since this Battle at the Beach was tournament style, Josh had to step in the ring a second time.  Again, the fight went to the ground and Josh landed in full mount delivering serious strikes to the head.  Although he got swept, he transitioned into a super tight triangle choke.  His only mistake was switching from this locked-in triangle to an arm bar attempt.  His opponent escaped and then later took Josh’s back, ending the fight with referee stoppage.

Both fighters made the staff and trainers at MMAI proud and have proven themselves to be among the rising stars of the MMAI fight team.
